At Caleidoscope, our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.

Our LEGO Clubs support autistic and neurodivergent children and young people to develop confidence, communication skills, friendships, emotional understanding, and teamwork through structured LEGO-based activities. None of this would be possible without our fantastic volunteers.

Some of our volunteers have been with us for over four years, while others join for a single term to gain valuable experience and develop new skills. Whether you are interested in psychology, teaching, counselling, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, healthcare, or simply enjoy working with children, volunteering with us can be a rewarding and meaningful experience.

What Will You Be Doing?

As a volunteer, you will help create a positive, supportive, and inclusive environment where children feel safe to explore their ideas and express themselves.

Your role may include:

• Encouraging children to build collaboratively with others
• Supporting communication and teamwork
• Helping children share their ideas and solve problems together
• Encouraging self-expression through LEGO
• Supporting emotional awareness and confidence
• Celebrating children's strengths and achievements

You won't be expected to provide solutions or tell children what to build. Instead, we encourage volunteers to listen, support, guide conversations, and help children develop their own ideas and confidence.

All children attending our sessions are neurodivergent, including autistic children, young people with ADHD, and those with other neurodevelopmental differences.

Commitment and Expectations

We ask volunteers to commit to attending regularly throughout the term whenever possible.

A typical term runs for 8–10 weeks, with sessions taking place every other Saturday. Dates are planned well in advance.

Volunteers are expected to arrive by 9:30am, with sessions usually finishing between 11:30am and 12:00pm.

Consistency is incredibly important to the children who attend our groups. Seeing familiar faces helps build trust, confidence, and positive relationships.

Please note that due to the training, DBS checks, supervision requirements, and the importance of building relationships with the children, we are looking for volunteers who can make a genuine commitment to attending sessions regularly.

All volunteers are required to sign a Volunteer Agreement before starting. This outlines responsibilities, expectations, safeguarding requirements, and our commitment to providing a safe and supportive volunteering experience.

Training and Induction

Before volunteering with Caleidoscope, all volunteers must complete our induction process.

This includes:

• Completion of an Enhanced DBS check (arranged and funded by Caleidoscope)
• Signing the Volunteer Agreement
• Attendance at two mandatory online training sessions

Training Session 1

• Understanding Autism
• Understanding ADHD
• Neurodiversity Awareness
• Introduction to LEGO-Based Therapy

Training Session 2

• Safeguarding Children and Young People
• Professional Boundaries
• Raising Concerns and Reporting Procedures

These sessions are delivered online and must be completed before volunteers can attend their first session.

No previous experience is required. We provide all the training and support needed to help volunteers feel confident in their role.

DBS Check

All volunteers who are 16 will have to complete DBS check, funded by Caleidoscope.

Travel Expenses

Where needed, we are happy to reimburse reasonable public transport costs upon receipt of bus, train, or other travel tickets.

References and Career Development

We are delighted to support volunteers with:

• Employment references
• Duke of Edinburgh Award sign-off
• Career guidance and mentoring

Many of our volunteers use their experience with Caleidoscope to strengthen applications for university courses and careers in psychology, education, counselling, healthcare, and social care.

Ongoing Support and Supervision

We believe that volunteers deserve support too.

From September, all volunteers will take part in a mandatory monthly supervision session led by a qualified psychotherapist. These are group sessions and will take place online, in the evening on agreed dates. 

These sessions form an important part of our volunteering programme and provide a safe space to reflect, learn, and develop new skills.

Supervision sessions will help volunteers to:

• Discuss experiences and challenges
• Build confidence in supporting neurodivergent children
• Develop communication and leadership skills
• Receive guidance and mentoring
• Explore future career pathways

Our aim is not only to support the children who attend our sessions but also to help our volunteers grow in confidence, knowledge, and experience.

• Are positive, respectful, and supportive of others

Previous experience is not required. We are looking for people with the right attitude, enthusiasm, and commitment.
