Emotionally Based School Avoidance

Understanding EBSA

Emotionally Based School Avoidance

Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) is a term used to describe difficulties attending school due to significant emotional distress.

EBSA is not about a child being “difficult”, “lazy”, or simply refusing to attend school. Instead, it reflects a young person experiencing overwhelming anxiety, emotional exhaustion, sensory overwhelm, fear, burnout, or distress linked to the school environment.

For many autistic and neurodivergent children and young people, school can become emotionally and physically overwhelming. Difficulties with sensory processing, social interaction, masking, anxiety, academic pressure, transitions, uncertainty, and feeling misunderstood can gradually lead to emotional exhaustion and burnout.

EBSA can look very different for every child. Some young people may experience panic or distress before school, while others may attend school but struggle internally throughout the day, masking their difficulties until they become overwhelmed at home.

Some children may develop physical symptoms such as stomach aches, headaches, nausea, exhaustion, or sleep difficulties linked to anxiety and stress.

Common Signs of EBSA

  • anxiety around school attendance
  • emotional distress before or after school
  • sleep difficulties
  • sensory overwhelm
  • shutdowns or meltdowns
  • social withdrawal
  • emotional exhaustion or burnout
  • difficulty leaving the house
  • increased emotional dysregulation
  • reduced attendance or lateness
  • school-related panic or anxiety

At Caleidoscope CIC, we understand that EBSA is often rooted in unmet needs, emotional overwhelm, and a young person feeling unsafe, unsupported, or unable to cope within their environment. Punishment, pressure, shame, or misunderstanding rarely resolve these difficulties and can often increase anxiety and distress.
